Fayetteville City Hospital has a tradition of excellence in providing a full spectrum of senior services in Northwest Arkansas. City Hospital has a long heritage of service to Northwest Arkansas as Fayetteville's first general hospital. It operated from 1912 to 1950 as a community-owned and governed hospital. Its role was redefined in the 1960's as a center specializing in the unique health needs of the elderly.
As a part of Washington Regional Medical System, Fayetteville City Hospital offers a variety of services: a 124-bed nursing home, a 16-bed subacute (recuperative care) unit, outpatient therapy and a 10-bed acute geriatric psychiatric program.
Long-Term Care
City Hospital provides superior nursing home care in a personal and supportive atmosphere. Residents are encouraged to live as independently as possible. Activities and specialized therapies are provided to enhance a resident's quality of life. It is our goal to facilitate a full and interesting life for our residents.
City Hospital attends to the physical, mental and psychological well being of each resident through a combination of nursing care, support services, specialized therapies and social services. A team of healthcare professionals closely evaluates each resident to develop a care plan to maximize a resident's full potential.
At Fayetteville City Hospital, we make every effort to create a pleasing and home-like environment. Residents are encouraged to personalize their room with special belongings. Meals are served in multiple dining rooms to suite special needs of each resident. Individual tastes and preferences are considered in meal preparation. Between meals, healthy snacks and beverages are provided.
The facility has common areas that are bright and cheerful. Accommodations are available for private parties and gatherings. A serene chapel provides a place for residents and families to meditate or read. The facility has two bird aviaries, an aquarium and a variety of indoor foliage. The grounds include a flower-filled courtyard and an Alzheimer's garden. The handicapped-accessible Alzheimer's garden provides a safe opportunity for outdoor relaxation. A wheelchair swing encourages physical activity. A fish pond and a potted garden complete the tranquil atmosphere.
Subacute Care
After an acute hospital stay, many seniors require additional therapy to regain their independence. City Hospital's subacute unit can provide a variety of services a patient may need. These services include physical, occupational, speech, respiratory therapy, intravenous medications and a variety of complex nursing services. Criteria for admission include a three-day acute care stay within the past 30 days and a skilled need that meets Medicare criteria. Most stays are paid for by Medicare and a supplementary insurance.
Transitions - Geriatric psychiatric program
Transitions is a Medicare-approved acute care psychiatric program for persons over the age of 55. Patients are encouraged to regain as much independence as possible through a combination of therapies, activities and education. Patients receive medical care from a psychiatrist and a family practice physician to address both the mental and physical needs.
Each patient has an individually tailored treatment plan. This treatment plan includes group/individual counseling, recreational activities, family therapy, medication management and continued care planning. Program services for qualified patients are covered by Medicare and most major health plans. The average length of stay at Transitions is 21 days.
To find out more about Transitions, call the program office at 1-877-587-2221 (toll free) or fax your request to (479) 587-2688. Fayetteville City Hospital Auxiliary
The Fayetteville City Hospital Auxiliary was organized on March 29, 1909 to help with community efforts to establish a hospital in Fayetteville. The group assisted in making contacts to secure contributions from the community. Its first fundraiser was a flower sale. Today, the auxiliary continues its strong support of Northwest Arkansas' first hospital.
Volunteers provide a number of services. They visit the nursing home residents. They provide music, help with birthday parties and host special theme-based dinners. They accompany residents on outings in the hospital van.
The auxiliary also hosts fundraising activities to fulfill its original mission of assisting with equipment, linen, patient care and social service needs. Funds are raised through the Attic Thrift Shop (operating since 1957), The Bair Lair gift and snack shop and through membership dues. City Hospital Auxiliary also awards the Auxiliary Scholarship each year to a deserving student who plans to study nursing.
